Crud, there's an easier way to do this than I'm going to tell you, but I can't seem to get it (clipping masks) to work!

So - either double click on you open photo so you can make it a layer (not a background) or duplicate it into a layer.

Use the shape tool to draw the shape on another layer.

Select the photo layer in the layer palette, while it is still selected, hold down the Ctrl key and click on the shape layer. This should load the shape as a selection (marching ants). Click on the mask icon at the bottom of the layer palette (gray rectangle with white circle).

That should do it. This doesn't show the steps, but it does show you the layers and how they look. http://i33.tinypic.com/9fmk5z.jpgHow do i cut out a shape in Adobe Photoshop CS2 using the custom shape tool (shapes that are premade)?
This is how I did it. It's a lot quicker than that method too.

First select you shape in the custom shape toolbar and next to it in mode select ';clear'; now draw your shape and this should cut it .
